The World’s Coolest Travel Interns Announce Love In Action 2010!

The mother of all internships is coming to a climax. The first few weeks were a bit of fun and games but now we are completing the intern equivalent of our master’s thesis.

It began with a simple challenge. Bruce called us into his office one evening just before Christmas and gave us our biggest assignment. He challenged us to figure out a way to raise $25,000 for Planeterra to fund a microsurgical eye camp in Tibet enabling vision restoration to more than 200 blind Tibetans.

After the overwhelming intimidation subsided, we looked around and realized that people that do this for a living surround us, and they are damn good at it. Heck, Planeterra has built entire communities and sustainable economies in some of the most remote places in the world.

Our Quixotic quest led us outside of the walls of base camp and into the reach of three of Toronto’s finest entertainment producers. There we learned of an annual event that was looking for a charity fundraiser. They believed strongly in what we were doing and told us that Planeterra was a perfect fit for their event.
So we were able to get involved in the best party in Toronto on St. Patrick’s Day. But that would be too easy! In true Gap Adventures fashion, our first instinct was to take a simple concept and push it as far as possible. What was initially an annual fundraising event is now a nation-wide call to action and the first steps of a movement.
